What is a holeshot?

In drag racing, the holeshot is winning off the start line: reacting and launching better than the other lane, even with a slower car.

Meaning

A holeshot is getting off the line first. In drag racing a driver who 'holeshots' an opponent wins because of a better reaction time and launch, sometimes even against a quicker car. In motocross and other racing, the holeshot is being first into the first corner.

The launch is where most of the time is won or lost. That is why Holeshot reports the 60-ft time — the clearest measure of how well a car leaves the line.

FAQ

Can you win a drag race with a slower car?
Yes — with a better reaction time and launch. That is what a holeshot win is.
